The tribes combined with French forces proved difficult foes for the English army and settler allies, until the appointment of General James Wolfe.

1885 The Dash for Khartoum: In the late nineteenth century, a Sudanese Arab known as Mahdi led a jihad, or religious war, against the Egyptians of the Sudan.
